Commissions: Open
I'm a marine biologist and illustrator, and I love helping people bring their ideas to life. Slots are limited while I finish my PhD, so get in touch early if you have a deadline.

Scientific Illustration
$35–50 / hr
Figures, graphical abstracts, journal covers, outreach and educational materials.
Students, early-career researchers, and under-resourced groups: pay what you can afford, no questions asked.
Funded labs and institutions: the suggested rate helps me keep the sliding scale available to those who need it.
Personal & Luxury Art
$50 / hr
Original pieces, characters, gifts, and anything else your heart desires.
How it works
- Get in touch. Tell me about your project, timeline, and how the art will be used.
- Consultation. A free hour to nail down what you need.
- Quote. I'll send a written quote with scope, price or estimated hours, timeline, and usage rights.
- Deposit. A 50% deposit reserves your slot and I get started.
- Sketch & revisions. You approve the sketch before I move to final. Two rounds of revisions are included; more are billed hourly.
- Delivery. Once the balance is paid, you get full-resolution files in the formats you need.
Usage & credit
Unless we agree otherwise:
- Scientific illustrations may be used in publications, presentations, posters, grant materials, and outreach, with credit to Freya Hammar.
- Personal commissions are for personal use. Commercial use (merch, prints for sale, branding) needs a separate license.
- I may share finished work in my portfolio and on social media. If your project is under embargo, just let me know and I'll wait until it's public.
FAQ
- How long does a commission take?
- It depends on scope and my queue. If it's simple and I'm free, I might not need more than a couple of hours. Complex pieces can take 2–6 weeks. If you have a hard deadline (a submission date, a conference), tell me upfront and I will do my best to get your illustration done in time.
- What do I need to provide for a scientific figure?
- Whatever helps me understand the science: a rough sketch, your data or figures, relevant papers, and who the audience is. My background is in biotech and oceanography, but I'm happy to illustrate for other fields.
- What won't you draw?
- Hateful content, sexual content (nudity is fine), extreme gore, or anything I'm not comfortable with. If you're unsure, ask! I may decline, but I'll never judge.
- Do you sell pre-made art?
- Yes! Check out my Gumroad shop.
